Which grid size should you use?

Quarter inch is the default in American classrooms — fine enough for graphing and column arithmetic, still big enough to write in. Half inch andone inch suit younger children and any task where one square stands for one unit, such as area and perimeter. Centimetre paper is the metric equivalent and the right choice for science and scale drawings. Beyond squares, dot grid gives you the lattice without the lines, isometric paper lets you draw in 3D, andhexagonal paper is used for game maps and chemistry rings.

Printing it true to scale

Printer dialogs default to shrinking a page slightly to fit their unprintable margin, which makes the squares come out under size. Choose Actual size or set the scale to 100% and the grid will measure exactly. If you need ruled writing paper instead, see thelined paper sheets.

Graph paper — frequently asked questions

How do I print graph paper to scale?

Set your printer to 100% scale and turn off "fit to page" or "shrink oversized pages". Every sheet here is drawn for US Letter at exactly 200 pixels to the inch, so at 100% the squares measure true.

What size graph paper should I use?

Quarter-inch is the classroom standard. Half-inch and one-inch suit younger children and area work; centimetre paper is the metric equivalent and best for science and scale drawings.

What is the difference between graph paper and grid paper?

They are the same thing — a page ruled into squares. "Graph paper" is the usual American term, "grid paper" and "squared paper" are used interchangeably elsewhere.

Do you have isometric and hex paper?
