About the perfect squares chart

A perfect square is a whole number multiplied by itself, and the name is literal: 36 counters set out 6 by 6 make a square, and a 6-inch square has an area of 36 square inches. Page 1 lists 1² to 50² with the multiplication written out beside each one, so it suits students meeting square numbers on the multiplication chart diagonal as well as those starting exponents. One pattern to look for: the last digit is always 0, 1, 4, 5, 6 or 9, never 2, 3, 7 or 8. Page 2 gives the cubes from 1³ to 25³, the number of unit cubes in a solid block of that size, which is where cubes turn up in 5th-grade volume work.

Frequently asked questions

What is a perfect square?

A number made by multiplying a whole number by itself. 49 is a perfect square because 7 × 7 = 49. 50 is not, because no whole number times itself makes 50.

How is this different from the square root chart?

It works in the other direction. This chart starts from n and gives n², up to 2,500. The square root chart starts from any whole number up to 200 and gives its root to three decimal places.

What is a perfect cube?

A whole number used as a factor three times: 4 × 4 × 4 = 64. It is the number of small cubes in a block 4 cubes long, 4 wide and 4 tall.

Is there a quick way to tell if a number is a perfect square?

Check the last digit first, since squares only end in 0, 1, 4, 5, 6 or 9. Then find the squares either side: 2,000 falls between 44² = 1,936 and 45² = 2,025, so it is not a perfect square.
