About these worksheets
The set gets harder every two sheets, so one download covers a mixed class or a family with children in different grades. Sheets 1 and 2 add and subtract within 20. Sheets 3 and 4 do the same with two-digit numbers, and most of those problems need regrouping. Sheets 5 and 6 are multiplication and division within 100. Sheets 7 and 8 are 4th-grade work: two-step stories, numbers up into the thousands, and one division problem on each sheet that leaves a remainder. No story is used twice in the set. Every problem has space to work underneath and an answer line with the unit already printed. The answer keys show the number sentence as well as the answer, so you can tell whether a wrong answer came from picking the wrong operation or from an arithmetic slip.

Frequently asked questions
Which sheets should I print for my grade?
Sheets 1 and 2 (within 20) fit 1st grade. Sheets 3 and 4 (two-digit adding and subtracting) are 2nd grade, sheets 5 and 6 (multiplication and division within 100) are 3rd grade, and sheets 7 and 8 (two-step problems and bigger numbers) are 4th grade. Each pair follows that grade’s Common Core word-problem standard: 1.OA.1, 2.OA.1, 3.OA.3 and 4.OA.3.
How do the remainder problems work?
Sheet 7 asks how many full bags Uncle Ray can make from 37 rolls, 9 to a bag: 37 ÷ 9 = 4 R 1, and one roll does not fill a bag, so the answer is 4. Sheet 8 asks how many tables 41 guests need at 8 to a table: 41 ÷ 8 = 5 R 1, and the extra guest still needs a seat, so the answer is 6. Both divisions leave 1 over, and the question decides what to do with it.
Do the answer keys show the work?
Yes. Each key shows the number sentence for every problem, and two-step problems get two lines. For Aunt Rosa’s leftover pie slices on sheet 8, the key shows 8 × 8 = 64, then 64 − 31 = 33. The answer is written on the line, so a stack of sheets is quick to grade.
Are there Thanksgiving multiplication problems?
Sheets 5 and 6 are multiplication and division stories with facts up to 10 × 10: slices from whole pies, chairs at tables, feathers on paper turkeys. Sheets 7 and 8 multiply bigger numbers, such as 18 tables of 9 students and a 22-pound turkey at 15 minutes a pound. For fact practice without the stories, use the single-digit multiplication worksheets.
