About the 1000 chart

The 1000 chart is where place value picks up a third digit. On the one-page version each row holds 20 numbers, so every fifth row ends on a hundred, and those ten hundreds are shaded and set in bold blue as landmarks. That makes it a good sheet for rounding to the nearest hundred: 438 sits between the 400 and 500 cells, and a child can see it is closer to 400. The hundred charts on pages 2 to 11 use the familiar ten-by-ten layout and are easier to read at a desk. The pages for 101–200 and 701–800 match cell for cell apart from the hundreds digit, so children see each hundred repeat the same pattern. Give each pair of students one hundred to work on.

Frequently asked questions

How is the one-page 1000 chart laid out?

Fifty rows of twenty. Going down one row adds 20, and every fifth row ends on a hundred. The ten hundreds are shaded and printed in bold blue so they are easy to find.

Why include ten separate hundred charts as well?

A thousand numbers on one sheet means small print. The hundred charts on pages 2 to 11 use the standard ten-by-ten layout with numbers about twice as large, which is better for counting work and for younger eyes.

What grade uses a 1000 chart?

Mainly 2nd grade, when students count, read and write numbers to 1000, and 3rd grade, when they round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

How do I make a 1000 chart wall display?

Print pages 2 to 11 and tape them in order along a wall or corridor. Each page picks up where the last one stopped, so children can walk the count from 1 to 1000.
